Taxi tips & fares in Albania
Everything you need to know to travel safely and pay a fair price.
1. Agree on the fare before departure
This is the single most important rule. Many Albanian taxis do not use meters consistently — especially at the airport and for intercity trips. Confirm the total price before you get in.
2. Use licensed taxis only
Licensed taxis have yellow plates and company branding. At Tirana Airport, use only the official yellow AHA taxis. Ignore touts inside the terminal.
3. Carry cash (Albanian Lek)
While some companies accept cards, cash is universally accepted and preferred. Keep small notes for exact fares.
4. Night rates apply
Between 22:00 and 07:00, flagfall increases by approximately 50 Lek. Expect to pay 20–30% more at night.
5. No Uber or Bolt
Ride-hailing apps like Uber, Bolt, and Free Now do not operate in Albania. Use traditional taxi companies or pre-booked transfers.
6. Pre-book airport transfers
Pre-booking guarantees a fixed price and avoids negotiation after a long flight. Especially recommended for families, groups, and late-night arrivals.
7. Save a phone number in advance
Before you arrive, save the number of at least one reliable taxi company in your phone. Hotel reception can also call a trusted company for you.
8. Understand the fare structure
| Charge | Day | Night |
|---|---|---|
| Flagfall (first 2 km) | 300 Lek | 350 Lek |
| Per additional km | 95 Lek | 95 Lek |
| Waiting (per hour) | ~500 Lek | ~500 Lek |
9. Watch for common scams
- Drivers claiming the meter is "broken" — quote the standard fare instead
- Airport touts posing as official taxi drivers
- Refusal to give change — carry small notes
- Longer routes than necessary — use Google Maps to verify
10. Tipping
Tipping is not obligatory but appreciated. Rounding up to the nearest 100 Lek is standard for good service.
